Projects Sponsored
St. Pauli TheaterWhere clothes really make people and no one lets their mask fall; that is where the curtain goes up. Theatre means illusion and fascination. The St.Pauli Theatre, closely connected to the Hapag-Lloyd Foundation as its main sponsor, stands for sophisticated entertainment culture. The Reeperbahn theatre, so rich in tradition, has returned to the ranks of stage production, at the highest artistic level and with first-class actors.
Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte – Hamburg History Museum
One part of the nearly 160 year-old Hapag-Lloyd’s self-image is to conserve and maintain cultural historic values. The support for Hamburg History Museum derives from this. The Foundation has been making a considerable contribution to enabling the restaging of important periods of Hamburg history, and configurating the round-tour of the museum more attractively. However, the Foundation also provides support behind the spectacular scenery. It is involved in the initial training of restorers who are thronging to join a modern, multi-faceted profession, indispensable for the museums.
Hamburg Ballett – Hamburg Ballet
John Neumeier is an artistic hallmark, inspiring people far beyond Hamburg. This is achieved not only with fantastic ideas and grace, but also discipline and hard work. Hapag-Lloyd Foundation annually awards grants to pupils from the ballet school managed by John Neumeier in recognition of outstanding performances by young dancers, who will maybe one day follow in the footsteps of their great role model.Junges Forum Musiktheater - Youth Musicals Forum
People think Hamburg has only one opera house. In reality a second also exists, Junges Opernhaus – Youth Opera House, where up and coming directors from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater – Academy for Music and Theatre can stage their final diploma productions. Hapag-Lloyd Foundation supports the course of studies in the production of musicals, which is unique in Germany. This forum, much valued by critics and public, has already gathered various awards.
Junges Schauspielhaus -Youth Theatre
Theatre inspires and has a lasting effect, raises questions and widens horizons. The Youth Theatre, supported by Hapag-Lloyd Foundation addresses itself to teenagers, who are continually searching for input. It provides interesting productions straddling the border between art and education; encouraging them to gather their first experience of theatre, exhibiting thought-provoking works at fixed points in their everyday lives, for example the topic of political asylum, potrayed in “Warrior Square” at the St.Pauli football team’s clubhouse.
Theater für Kinder - Children’s TheatreFor more than thirty years the famous ‘Theater für Kinder’ has been showing both child and adult audiences the richness of the theatre world. In its fantastic atmosphere it presents traditional, musical and, from time to time, unconventional plays in an intelligent and gripping fashion. Children are the theatre public of tomorrow. They are being prepared for it happily and carefully by Hapag-Lloyd Foundation’s partner, the ‘Theater für Kinder’.
Art Exhibitions
The Foundation is increasingly staging its own projects, including alternating exhibitions of pictures, sculptures and photos. The first was dedicated to the painter Volker Altenhof and the sculptor Georg Engst. From such events – as with the Foundation’s activities altogether – it is above all Hapag-Lloyd staff, who profit most too. Gotthold Ephraim Lessing knew that, “Pleasure is just as important as work”. Art promotes creativity, communication and motivation, these being the values which substantially characterize Hapag-Lloyd’s corporate philosophy.
Music and Art Therapy
For many leukaemia sufferers it is the last hope: the centre for bone marrow transplantation (KMT) at the Eppendorf University Clinic in Hamburg, recognized Europe-wide as the leading centre. Annually, more than one hundred patients suffering from virulent blood diseases are treated there. The life-threatening illnesses and the radical medical treatments not infrequently induce serious traumas in those afflicted. Therefore, the KMT centre places great value on an integrated psychosocial treatment concept, which is supported by Hapag-Lloyd Foundation. Music therapy does the patients good, at all stages of treatment, helping them to overcome the psychological and physical effects of bone marrow transplantation better. Art therapy is similarly effective in the outpatients’ area. For many patients a whole cycle of pictures emerge in the course of time, mirroring their way through their inner darkness to the soft light of their restored everyday lives.
Plan International
The poverty in this world affects children especially badly. They cannot go to school and frequently already have to work just as hard as the adults. Plan International has made it its business to help children and their families in developing countries regardless of race, religion, or political circumstances. This is primarily achieved through sponsorships. With the monthly contributions paid by the sponsors, Plan International finances valuable community projects in the children’s villages, such as schools, wells and hospitals. Plan’s work also serves to promote understanding between cultures and offers the chance to exchange letters with people from other cultures, or even to make real personal contact. Hapag-Lloyd Foundation supports Plan International, successfully involving Hapag-Lloyd group staff in this commitment.
