Hapag-Lloyd took delivery of its latest newbuilding, the “Vienna Express”, today. The newbuilding is featuring an environment-friendly technology.

“With this newbuilding, we have taken a great step forward in improving environmental protection and cutting fuel consumption by adapting main engine performance to the new reduced speed range,” noted Ulrich Kranich, executive board member of Hapag-Lloyd AG, on the occasion of the delivery of the “Vienna Express” by Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan (Korea) today. He added that Hapag-Lloyd is thereby again setting standards in its industry.

The main engine performance, originally designed for 68,640 kW, was reduced to 51,480 kW. The newbuilding also has a variable exhaust gas bypass for the turbocharger, which is regulated by the electronic engine control. Maximum speed is reduced slightly, but the overall lower fuel consumption increases the vessel’s endurance from 23,300 to 27,700 nautical miles.

The “Vienna Express” has a length of 337m and a beam of 43m and can carry 8,750 standard containers. Nine layers of containers are stowed under deck and eight on deck, where there are 17 containers next to one another. The ship has 730 reefer plugs. She will be deployed – along with eleven more units of the same size – in Loop B of the Grand Alliance between Europe and Asia, calling at Dalian, Xingang, Pusan, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Singapore, Hamburg, Antwerp, Southampton, Cagliari, Jeddah, Jebel Ali, Singapore, Shekou, Qingdao, Pusan and Dalian again.
