Women represent only a small part of the maritime industry’s predominantly male workforce, but change is in sight. Hapag-Lloyd is sponsoring the 40th WISTA convention in Hamburg to promote diversity in shipping personnel and women driving executive processes.
Even in 2020, female leaders are chronically underrepresented in the international shipping and trading sector. Overall, the industry has great potential for progress. Supporting the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA), Hapag-Lloyd aims to bring about just that: We want to stir the industry forward, bridging the gender gap and attracting the next generation of female leaders.
Today’s actions for tomorrow’s business
The motto of the 40th WISTA conference in Hamburg is “Shipping 2025 – Today’s actions for tomorrow’s business”. It sheds light on the topics sustainability, digitization and infrastructure, as well as the IMO World Maritime theme: “Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet”.
Hapag-Lloyd believes that new technologies in the sector empower the industry to create a more diverse labor pool. Especially digitalization and technology enable women and men alike to contribute to the industry’s progress in emerging maritime professions with an abundance of different skill sets.
