Hapag-Lloyd supports professional sailor Boris Herrmann for the next five years

His participation in the spectacular Vendée Globe regatta made Boris Herrmann one of the world’s best-known sailors at the end of last year. Now Hapag-Lloyd has signed a sponsorship contract with him and his Team Malizia. The five-year collaboration is about more than the races.

“A Race We Must Win” – with this message on the sails of his yacht, skipper Boris Herrmann sailed around the world during the Vendée Globe. He single-handedly sailed around the three capes – non-stop in a good 80 days. His goal: to use the slogan to raise awareness of climate change. Together with his Team Malizia, Boris Herrmann collects crucial scientific data from the most remote parts of the world during his sailing missions. The data helps researchers understand the negative effects of climate change on the oceans. Boris Herrmann and his team also regularly explain the effects on the climate to schoolchildren during their voyages.

Hapag-Lloyd and Boris Herrmann are united by their fascination for ships and oceans. Both are strongly committed to decarbonization and protecting the climate. In recent years, for example, Hapag-Lloyd has taken extensive measures to significantly reduce the CO2 intensity of its own fleet and its impact on the environment.

“I am extremely happy to have the full support of Hapag-Lloyd,” says Boris Herrmann. “Over the past year, we have already developed a strong partnership and I can feel Hapag-Lloyd’s determination to become a pioneer in decarbonization. It will be a pleasure to have Hapag-Lloyd’s logo on the sail of my racing yacht.”

Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen: “We share the same values and together we want to help find solutions to counteract a climate crisis. We strongly believe that together we can achieve a lot. While Boris and his team continue to focus on winning races, marine research and educational initiatives, we want to contribute to climate action in the shipping industry.”
