Capturing the magic of the maritime world through Michela Canale’s lens

In today’s fast-paced work environment, finding ways to recharge and unwind is essential. At Hapag-Lloyd, our colleagues bring unique passions that not only help them relax but also inspire fresh perspectives in their work. Today, we introduce you to Michela Canale, MED-Senior Coordinator Digitalization at Hapag-Lloyd, based in Genoa, who's passion for photography and the maritime industry has led to exhibitions, a published book, and the establishment of the Vessel Partnership Program, fostering connections between office staff and seafarers.

“When I was younger, I loved creative activities, but after having children, time for such activities became limited. With the rise of modern smartphones, I always had a camera with me, and that is when I started documenting the wonders of the maritime world”, reveals Michela. Michela has spent over two decades in the maritime industry, with 17 years dedicated to Hapag-Lloyd. Living in Genoa, a vibrant port city, she perfectly complements her deep connection to the sea and shipping. She shares her life with her partner who is also in the maritime sector and their children.

Michelas journey at Hapag-Lloyd started in the Steering department, followed by a dynamic stint in Sales after returning from maternity leave. Later, she transitioned to the Area MED Agent department, where she has been for 12 years. Since 2019, Michela has been leading her team into the digital era, driving innovation across Mediterranean agencies and sub-areas. ”I love combining my professional experience with my creative side through photography, which allows me to explore and share the stories of the maritime world from a unique perspective”, tells us Michela proudly.

Establishing a strong connection with the fleet is particularly important to Michaela. For her, it is the people on the ship that make the ship so special.

Michela finds peace in photography, a passion that began with documenting the vibrant life of the Port of Genoa. “There is magic in exploring every corner of the port – cranes towering against the sky, ships of all sizes docked or in motion, rugged docks alive with activity, and dry docks echoing with the hum of repairs”, explains Michela. Since 2015, this hobby has grown into a true love for maritime storytelling. “I was captivated by its unique beauty, and I often found myself exploring restricted areas to capture the essence of the port. Many times, I was asked to leave, but I always came back – it became my mission to share the hidden stories of this incredible place”, she further reveals.

I believe it is incredibly important to help office staff understand life onboard and how terminal operations work, while for the crew, receiving visitors is always a pleasure. They have always been very welcoming, and that gave me even more opportunities to capture great moments that I love to share with others.

Photography has given her a unique perspective on the maritime industry: “It allows me to see beauty in the complexity of what we do.” Through her hobby, she developed a deeper appreciation for teamwork, precision, and the scale of operations, which she brings back to her work. “During the COVID-pandemic, I started visiting our vessels whenever they passed through the port of Genoa to deliver gifts to the crews and offer them support. Many captains followed me on social media and invited me onboard. That is how the Vessel Partnership, which is still in place at Hapag-Lloyd, was born”, tells us Michela. The Vessel Partnership Program is an initiative by Hapag-Lloyd to connect the office staff with their colleagues ashore. Various joint activities are part of this program. “I believe it is incredibly important to help office staff understand life onboard and how terminal operations work, while for the crew, receiving visitors is always a pleasure. They have always been very welcoming, and that gave me even more opportunities to capture great moments that I love to share with others.”, explains Michela. With some captains Michela even became friends. “Our seafarers are extraordinary people, dedicating their lives to this work”, she emphasizes.

"Now I'm even allowed to sit on the captain's seat", Michela reveals proudly during the interview

Michelas dedication has led to recognition, with her work featured in exhibitions at the Genoa Port Authority and Maritime Museum. “That was special. I could only have dreamt of something like that! It was the push I needed to finally publish my own book”, says Michela. Her book, Ourport – Genoa Port 24h, offers a vivid glimpse into the port’s ceaseless activity.
