Port of the month: Shenzhen – the booming port of the People’s Republic

The Chinese city of Shenzhen is symbolic of the country’s economic boom. What was once a fishing village has grown to become home to over 12 million inhabitants – and one of the fastest-growing mega-cities in the world.

The special economic zone in Guandong Province is located in the Pearl River Delta metropolitan region and borders the special administrative region of Macau and Hong Kong. The region is already one of the most densely populated areas in the world, and the number of inhabitants continues to rise. The area used to be covered by rice fields, and over 160 rivers and channels still flow through the city. Today, it is mostly known for being home of the second-largest port in China.

The Port of Shenzhen, a collective name for a number of ports along the coast of Shenzhen, is considered one of the fastest-growing and busiest container ports in the world. Since 2007, Shenzhen and Hamburg have had a port partnership. The seaport has several container terminals, with the most important being Yantian, Shekou and Chiwan. The Shekou container terminal is also part of Hapag-Lloyd's global service network.
