Rolf Habben Jansen opens new Region South Europe headquarters

Now around 300 employees in Genoa

On Thursday, 10 October 2019, our CEO, Rolf Habben Jansen, officially opened the new headquarters of Region South Europe (RSE) in Genoa. Together with Juan Pablo Richards, the newly appointed Managing Director RSE, and Torsten Nolting, Managing Director Area Italy, he visited the new office in the centre of Genoa and welcomed the new employees.

During the opening event, Habben Jansen explained the motivation to create a new region, saying: “Since our merger with UASC in 2017, the Mediterranean region has gained more importance for us. That’s why we are eager to bolster our competitive position in this attractive and growing market and to exploit further opportunities.”

The new region was created by splitting the former Region Europe into northern and southern parts. It will include Area Italy, Area Iberia (Spain and Portugal), Area Turkey, Area Egypt and Area Med Agents, which covers the 19 countries in the region where Hapag-Lloyd is represented by 15 third-party agents.

“The Mediterranean has significant growth potential for us”

In the evening, Habben Jansen and Juan Pablo Richards presented the new region in a press conference, which was also attended by Paolo Emilio Signorini, President of the Port Authority of the Western Ligurian Sea, and Francesco Maresca, a member of Genoa’s city council with special oversight of the port.

Habben Jansen underlined how the new region offers lots of opportunities for Hapag-Lloyd, saying: “The Mediterranean region is an extremely attractive market, and we see lots of potential to grow here.”

Referring to the already strong position of Hapag-Lloyd in the region – with more than 130 port calls, 28 liner services and the expertise of roughly 900 colleagues in the region – Richards emphasised the need to move even closer to the customer. “Customer expectations are changing rapidly these days,” he said. “With our new Region South Europe, we will be implementing a more flexible and agile structure to better serve our customers’ needs and to improve our products and services.”

Hapag-Lloyd now has six different regions: North Europe (based in Hamburg/Germany), South Europe (Genoa/Italy), North America (Piscataway/USA), Latin America (Valparaíso/Chile), Middle East (Dubai/UAE) and Asia (Singapore).
