THE Alliance – Even stronger thanks to a new partner

Wider port coverage, more sailing frequencies and completely new services – our customers will greatly benefit from the revamped service network of THE Alliance. With Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) as a new member, we will be even more strongly positioned on the major trade routes in global East-West traffic.

To make the international transport of goods even easier to plan on a global scale, more and more shipping companies have entered into strategic alliances. In 2017, Hapag-Lloyd teamed up with several other shipping companies to form THE Alliance. In addition to Hapag-Lloyd, the Japanese liner shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) and the Taiwan-based carrier Yang Ming will be welcoming Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM), a Korean global player, as a new partner. Together, they will be offering a new, attractive package of products beginning on 1 April 2020. In total, 280 efficient container ships operating in 33 liner services will call at 78 ports in Asia, Europe, the Mediterranean, North and Central America, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent.

The “fantastic four” – HMM to bring in more giant new container ships

HMM will boost the competitiveness of THE Alliance by bringing in several new and modern vessels. In the second quarter of 2020, a dozen 23,000 TEU ships will be delivered to HMM and deployed in the Far East-North Europe trade lane. HMM will also be welcoming eight 15,000 TEU newbuildings into its fleet in the second quarter of 2021. The expanded fleet capacity will enable higher sailing frequencies, shorter transit times and broader port coverage in THE Alliance’s network.

Bundled experience and strategic competencies

Among other things, the expanded service package will make it possible to offer improved transpacific coverage of Southeast Asia. In addition, it will offer customers three restructured express services and additional efficient services for Asia and Europe.
