The crew of our 19,000 TEU vessel "Barzan" became true lifesaver last month. In the beginning of March, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC) alerted our crew on the "Barzan" to search for a crew member of the bulk carrier "m/v Galini" who had fallen overboard in the evening. After an almost 22-hour search that seemed virtually hopeless, our crew became aware of him and rescued him.
While our "Barzan" was just transiting the Indian Ocean en route from Singapore to the Suez Canal, our Master received a satellite call from MRCC Mumbai requesting him to proceed to the position LAT 10° 57.1'N LON 061°33.4'E where the M/V Galini had reported a man overboard (MOB). Immediately the position of the distress was plotted on the ECDIS and the vessel proceeded at full speed towards the distress position.
After almost full day of search action with increasing wind and waves, just one and half hour before sun set, when search area had been extended and hope was fading away, the missing person has been successfully spotted in the water, without any life-saving equipment or clothes. The casualty was successfully recovered from the water after more than 18 hours drifting in the water, by using life buoy with line in open Indian Ocean almost on the edge of the search zone. His condition was checked, first assistance was provided including water for hydration, basic clothes and any other needs as required.
On 27 March our "Barzan" berthed in Le Havre, where on behalf of Ship Management Dubai, our port agent Mr. Sylvain Defresne welcomed Captain Michalski and his crew with a big surprise: In addition to the Certificate of Commendation our colleagues on board received a variety of French delicacies (cheese, chocolate, pastries, baguettes, fresh fruits) for an enjoyable celebration in the evening.
We want to thank the Master and all his crew, for a great support for the safety of life at sea as well as good preparation and professionalism. In these troubled times, such events are especially joyful.
