This month, the "Hanoi Express" became the first Hapag-Lloyd vessel to undergo ship-to-ship LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling in Hong Kong. The operation marked the city’s largest single LNG bunkering to date and significantly reduced the vessel’s port stay.
Hapag-Lloyd has successfully completed a record-setting LNG bunkering operation with its vessel "Hanoi Express" at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals in Hong Kong. Conducted in cooperation with local partners CLPe and CNOOC Guangdong, the operation supplied approximately 10,000 cubic metres of LNG via the “Haiyang Shiyou 301” - the world’s largest LNG bunkering and transport vessel.
The integrated process allowed the "Hanoi Express" to refuel while simultaneously loading and unloading cargo, completing the operation within 24 hours and minimizing turnaround time.
“Bunkering in Hong Kong went very well, and we finished before the planned departure time,” said Captain Markus Grote of the "Hanoi Express". “Hong Kong was chosen due to the size of LNG tankers available there. In other ports, we would have needed two operations to refuel the 4,400 tonnes required for the return to Rotterdam. However, our ship will no longer call at Hong Kong in the future as part of the new NE2 service under the Gemini Cooperation.”
This successful operation highlights Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to operational efficiency and advancing the use of more sustainable fuel solutions across our fleet.
