With teams working across 139 countries, Hapag-Lloyd is shaped by colleagues with different nationalities, cultures, and perspectives. Our global reach is reflected not only in our wide spread of working locations, but also in the variety of people we work with every day – their backgrounds, ideas, traditions, and experiences. Every employee brings unique value to our business and is also able to broaden their own global perspective.
To make our cultural diversity as tangible as possible we make cultural exchange and celebration visible throughout the year. Employees can experience, shape and express this through global and local events and seasonal celebrations such as Lunar New Year, Christmas or Diwali. Here, we create space to share traditions, mark important occasions, and offering others a closer look at what matters in their communities and cultures. By fostering this holistic understanding for one another we make sure that within Hapag-Lloyd, every ‘port’ truly feels like a place to belong.
Alongside these cultural celebrations we offer shared formats which bring our colleagues from around the globe together: Our Football Tournament with teams from around the globe, Feria Latina+ or Hapag-Lloyd’s Got Talent, a global virtual talent show. These moments help build connection across borders and remind us that our diverse culture at Hapag-Lloyd are not just part of who we are – it is part of how we work together.
Some highlights from the past year
Valentine’s Day is marked in many different ways across our locations, often with a focus on appreciation and friendship. In Viña del Mar, a “Corner of Good Gestures” invited colleagues to take a photo with a cupped-hand gesture, while teams in the U.S. shared a breakfast potluck. In Hamburg, a concert evening was organized, including a plus one.
Across our offices in India, Holi was celebrated as the festival of colors and a welcome to spring. Teams brought the day to life with cheerful decorations, traditional color splashes, and creative hand-painted bottles displayed across locations. The celebrations were bright, personal, and shaped by local traditions on site.
Feria Latina+ turned our Hamburg HQ into a lively meeting place for cultures through booths representing Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and guest country Egypt. Colleagues shared traditional dishes, music, and cultural accessories, and visitors could learn fun facts directly from the people behind each stand. The program also included talks, live performances, mini workshops, and a bingo session.
The Hapag-Lloyd Football Tournament brings teams from around the world to Hamburg, with more than 1,200 participants taking part. To keep the day running smoothly, players and supporters are coordinated through tickets, hotel shuttles, and clear schedules, with a livestream available for those joining remotely. On site, a special highlight included a table football challenge at professional foosball tables, including matches against two Bundesliga players.
For many of our seafarers, celebrations are spent thousands of miles away from home, keeping global trade moving while families around the world celebrate together. Although the setting may be different, the spirit of the season is very much alive on board. For Christmas, for example, crews across our fleet create their own traditions — decorating the mess room, exchanging small gifts, and taking time to celebrate together whenever operations allow.These moments of togetherness remind us that a ship is more than a workplace; it's a community.
During Pride Week in Hamburg, colleagues joined the Christopher Street Day celebrations and took to the streets with their own truck, even with light rain. The 2025 motto was “Let’s make waves, for a future that includes all genders,” and the week ran from July 26 to August 3. At the head office, the Pride flag was raised as a visible sign that everyone should feel respected and welcome.
