Young academics and researchers may now apply for awards for global action and globalization research / Presentation ceremony in November in Hamburg City Hall / Awards come with a combined purse of €60,000
This coming November will be the 100th anniversary of the death of Albert Ballin, the former general director of Hapag. To mark this milestone, Hapag-Lloyd will be awarding a total of three Albert Ballin awards. The “Albert Ballin Award for Global Action” and the two “Albert Ballin Awards for Globalization Research” come with a combined purse of €60,000.
“By establishing the Albert Ballin awards, we are commemorating the man who made us great: Albert Ballin,” says Nils Haupt, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at Hapag-Lloyd. “The Hamburg native and shipping company executive, who was an engine of the first globalization around 1900, combined commercial vigor with social and political responsibility.”
The “Albert Ballin Award for Global Action” will be awarded to individuals or institutions that assume social, cultural or political responsibility through their action and thereby set an example for others. With this award, Hapag-Lloyd will honor global initiatives that foster networking among peoples and cultures as well as those that advocate on behalf of the victims of globalization. It comes with a purse of €50,000 and will be awarded at regular four-year intervals.
The two “Albert Ballin Awards for Globalization Research” will be awarded to up-and-coming young academics and researchers whose research broadens and deepens our understanding regarding the opportunities and risks of globalization. Each of the prizes comes with a €5,000 purse and will be awarded at regular four-year intervals. With these awards, the liner shipping company aims to promote innovative and critical projects that use social science, the humanities and cultural studies to investigate the processes and problems of globalization, thereby laying the groundwork for responsible action in the future. Young academics and researchers are now invited to apply for the awards. The deadline to receive applications is July 15, 2018. The winners will be selected by an interdisciplinary jury. Detailed information on the application process can be found on the Hapag-Lloyd website.
The first-ever Albert Ballin awards will be presented during a gala reception to be held in Hamburg City Hall on November 6, 2018. In addition, Hapag-Lloyd will be hosting the first-ever Albert Ballin Forum in Hamburg on November 6 and 7, 2018. The scientific symposium on globalization research is a collaboration with the Hamburg Museum as well as the historian and communications scholar Rainer Gries, who holds the Franz Vranitzky Chair for European Studies at the University of Vienna.
