Udo Lindenberg presents huge painting for Hapag-Lloyd

Udo Lindenberg spent over a year working on his largest painting to date: On 6.50 x 3.00 metres, the German rock star and painter conveys his view of Hamburg, Hapag-Lloyd and his life in the Hanseatic city.

“I am very happy that I was able to convince my good friend Udo Lindenberg to realise this massive work of art for us. It goes without saying that it will be given a place of honour on the Ballindamm and that visitors will be able to admire it at future public events,” said Michael Behrendt, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Hapag-Lloyd AG.

“Udo Lindenberg’s painting portrays an extremely well-crafted combination of both his musical career and the history of our company, such as the embarkation of emigrants to America in the 19th century, the brilliant Director-General Albert Ballin, the historic main building of Hapag-Lloyd on the Ballindamm, and even a container ship of our shipping company. The fact that Hapag-Lloyd can now call Udo Lindenberg’s largest painting to date its own makes us very proud,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG.

And Udo Lindenberg commented: “A bright panopticon of Udo figures is brought together with Hamburg’s skyline, containers, heavenly founding fathers and flamingos. The ‘Andrea Doria’ sails through the painting accompanied by mermaids. Guitars go to Erich Honecker instead of guns. And I myself am relaxing with my hat and cigar in front of the Hotel Atlantic , my home for almost 30 years. You can’t get more Hamburg, more Hapag-Lloyd and more ‘Panic Udo’. And what was the maxim about art? The image is supposed to be so awesome that the viewer faints out of sheer delight . A big ‘Ahoy’ and ‘No Panic’ – it’s done. Cheers to egg liqueur!”

The latest masterpiece by Hamburg’s honorary citizen, which was created in collaboration with his assistant, Ann-Kathrin Otto, was officially unveiled by Udo Lindenberg at Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters on Ballindamm on 12 August. It replaces a historic oil painting that had adorned Hapag-Lloyd AG’s largest event hall in previous decades.
