North Europe: Current operational situation affecting inland transportation

We would like to provide you with an update on the current operational situation affecting inland transportation to and from the North Sea and western European ports.

Rail and inland waterway services across the European hinterland network continue to face significant challenges due to infrastructure works, capacity restrictions and unforeseen operational disruptions. As a result, transport reliability remains limited, and delays throughout the network should be expected.

For rail transportation to and from German ports, the ongoing infrastructure works along the Fulda corridor remain one of the main operational challenges. The second construction phase is scheduled to continue until July 30, 2026, significantly reducing available rail capacity, particularly for connections to and from Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

In addition to the planned construction works, several unexpected incidents, including infrastructure failures, derailments and route closures, have placed further pressure on the already heavily utilized diversion routes. Consequently, train cancellations, extended transit times and missed terminal slots cannot currently be ruled out.

Due to the high level of congestion across the network, disruptions in one area may also affect rail services in other regions. Previously confirmed transport schedules and container positioning dates may therefore need to be adjusted at short notice to secure the earliest feasible transportation option.

At the same time, inland waterway transportation to and from the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp continues to be affected by congestion and persistently low water levels on the River Rhine. These conditions have significantly reduced available capacity, resulting in longer transit times and an increased risk of delays throughout the inland waterway network.

Our teams are working closely with terminals, rail operators and transportation partners to minimize the impact and secure the earliest available solution for your cargo.

Please note there may be temporary limitations in the availability of empty containers due to the current low water situation on the Rhine. We are working to use alternative supply routes to support existing and new bookings, but short-term impacts may occur.
