Port of the month: Callao – One of South America’s most important fishing and trading ports

Founded in 1537 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro, this coastal city in Peru quickly became Spain's main trade hub on the Pacific. Today, Callao handles approximately three-quarters of Peru’s imports and exports, which makes it a significant part of Hapag-Lloyd’s service network.

Together with the capital city and several surrounding districts, Callao forms the Lima metropolitan area, which is home to over 12 million people (as of 2018) . Lima’s old town, which is built like a chessboard, has been a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. But the regions surrounding the city also has a lot to offer. In fact, the entire country is especially famous for pristine natural environments that are hardly imaginable in other countries. Some 2 million tourists travel to Peru every year to visit sites such as Machu Picchu, the ruined city of the Incas built in the 15th century.

Even though the World Bank classifies Peru as an emerging country, it boasts the most stable economy in all of Latin America, which can be attributed to a number of successful industries, including fishing and mining. In fact, the country’s top exports are fish and meat products. In addition to other foodstuffs, such as coffee and sugar, Peru is also known for its export of mineral raw materials, including copper, zinc, gold, crude oil and lead.

In addition, the country is continuously working to upgrade its infrastructure – an effort in which. Hapag-Lloyd has also played a role. For example, since July 2016, 42 trains have been transported on Hapag-Lloyd vessels from Italy to Callao in the Mediterranean to South America Westcoast Service (MSW), which starts in Chile and ends in Spain . The total of 252 subway wagons are to be deployed on Line 2 of Lima’s subway network. In addition to the MSW, there are nine other liner services that call at the Port of Callao, which you can find here.
