It was a national tragedy: on 14th August 2018, Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy, collapsed, sending vehicles and tons of rubble to the ground. On the morning of the incident, Genoa was hit by a fierce thunderstorm. Just before noon, a 300ft section of the highway collapsed, falling almost 150ft to the ground. 43 people were killed.
For Hapag-Lloyd and all other shipping lines, the collapse caused a significant handicap in the logistics chain, as the bridge was an extremely important element for inland transportion After the entire bridge was blown up in a controlled manner shortly after the collapse, it was rebuilt within only two years thanks to the energetic support of more than thousands of workers.
On the occasion of the first anniversary of the new bridge, now called "San Giorgio", Gabriel Rossi, Director Operations at Hapag-Lloyd in Italy, reflects on this new symbol of Genoa. The new bridge was built by the world-famous Italian architect Renzo Piano, who is a native of Genoa.
