In mid-September, the time had come again: colleagues from many countries and departments came together to make our planet a little cleaner around the international Coastal Cleanup Day on 17 September.
As in previous years, we called for Clean Up campaigns – which were once again attended by numerous highly motivated helpers. Various Hapag-Lloyd Regions around the world launched their own environmental protection campaigns. The teams collected bags of plastic and other waste and had a lot of fun in the process. In many different places, but still together, we contributed to freeing our environment from plastic waste.
Thailand: teamwork against pollution
Our employees and their families in Thailand worked together for a cleaner future. At Bangsaen Beach in Chonburi, they collected plastic and other waste. There was no shortage of fun either: the action was a great joint activity for our colleagues, who displayed great teamwork!
Germany: cleaning up the waterfront with 'Oclean' and 'De Fleetenkieker'
In Hamburg, colleagues took part in Clean Up actions. On 19 September, they collected plastic waste around the Elbe and Alster, that could otherwise have ended up in the rivers. The team was able to remove almost 100 kilograms of rubbish and litter from the streets and bushes around our headquarters. Our corporate citizenship partner Oclean guided us again this year.
Together with the environmental and water protection association “De Fleetenkieker”, our Sustainability Department then set about cleaning the waters around our headquarters on 20 September. Like last year, they removed considerable quantities of bottles and plastic waste from the water, which would otherwise have been washed into the North Sea via the Elbe. If everyone lends a hand, together we can make a difference!
France: from cars to cigarette butts
In France, the rubbish collection campaigns were a great success as well. In Paris, Le Havre and Marseille, our teams spent an eventful afternoon. Through their combined efforts, they disposed of and recycled a total of 1,550 litres of rubbish: this included a pram, the remains of an electric car and at least 14 glass bottles. They also bagged 75 litres of cigarette butts – that is around 56,250 cigarettes that now no longer pollute our environment!
Region Middle East: together we can achieve more
Hapag-Lloyd’s Middle East Region teamed up with DHL Global Forwarding Middle East & Africa for Clean Up Day. More than 700 volunteers from both companies cleaned up the coastlines at six locations: Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, the United Arab Emirates, India, and Pakistan. In Johannesburg, Durban, and Kuwait, our teams also launched their own initiatives. In many places, the collected waste is now being processed into recycled products!
Asia and Singapore: every drop counts
On Coastal Cleanup Day, several employees from Singapore and the surrounding area, along with their family members, took kayaks around the coast of Pulau Ubin. Among other things, they fished plastic bottles, food packaging, clothes hangers, and polystyrene directly from the water and beaches. The campaign was carried out in cooperation with the Adventure Paddlers.
We thank all our colleagues around the globe who have joined us in working for clean coasts!
