Here’s an update for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) shipments

If you’re shipping Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) or e-waste, here’s an update that might impact your cargo planning. Starting this January, you will need to present a transboundary movement approval from the concerned environmental protection agencies. This will apply for export, import, and transit moves as stated in the Basel Convention common rules.

What is e-waste?

The Basel Convention describes e-waste as “electrical or electronic equipment that is waste, including all components, sub-assemblies and consumables that are part of the equipment at the time the equipment becomes waste”

To access all the information related to e-waste, you can follow this link to the Basel Convention website.

What is changing?

From January 2025, you will need to obtain the related permits according to the Amber Listed waste procedure. This includes notification and consents from the involved countries, from load, transit, channel passages and discharge ports. for your e-waste transport.

Due to the sensitivity of this cargo, our teams will have to run pre-checks. This means that your Hapag-Lloyd Sales Partner will assist by reaching out to the DG Sensitive Cargo desk for pre-evaluation. To speed up the process, you can refer to the Basel Convention- or OECD waste code during the request stage.

What should you do?

  • Send your waste request to your Hapag-Lloyd Sales Partner.
  • Please know that we will be reaching out to you in case of missing information or documents.
  • Always provide the related quotation reference when sending the shipping instructions.

For further information regarding the waste handling process, you may reach out to [email protected].
