North American Rail Requirements for HAZMAT Placards: Reminder

Please be reminded that for inland intermodal transport by rail and in compliance with rules adopted by the North American Railroads, Hapag-Lloyd have the following rules for placarding containers.

Side mounted hazardous placards must be located in the areas outlined below:

  • At least 1ft. / 0.3 meters from the top of the equipment.
  • At least 5ft. / 1.5 meters from the equipment’s bottom.
  • At least 5ft. / 1.5 meters from the equipment's end to ensure visibility.

End placards must be located with the same top and bottom placement restrictions.

This requirement will improve visibility of placards when units are placed in the bottom well of a rail car.

Failure of Shipper to comply with these North American Rail placarding requirements may result in delays to the container shipment. Customer will be responsible for any and all additional costs that are incurred by Hapag-Lloyd to remedy the non-compliance.
