Italy: Rail restrictions may affect inland services during Summer 2026

Ports & Inland Europe Italy

Thinking about your cargo planning, please note that several infrastructure works scheduled by RFI during Summer 2026 may affect inland rail services in Italy. Depending on the period and corridor, rail connections may be affected by operational restrictions, capacity reductions, route deviations and possible transit time extensions.

Please find below the main disruptions that may impact Hapag-Lloyd inland rail services:

From June 1, 2026, to September 28, 2026

  • Possible reduction in train frequency and available capacity on services to and from Milan due to infrastructure works in the Po Bridge area.

Services mainly affected:

  • Milan - Genoa
  • Milan - La Spezia
  • Padua - Genoa
  • Padua - La Spezia

From July 18, 2026, to August 17, 2026

  • Possible reduction in train frequency and available capacity to and from Genoa Voltri due to the closure of the Mignanego rail line.
  • Trains may be rerouted via alternative corridors, potentially resulting in extended transit times.

From August 2, 2026, to August 16, 2026

  • Possible reduction in available rail capacity on connections to and from North-East Italy due to the closure of the Verona-Vicenza rail line.

Services mainly affected:

  • Padua - Genoa Voltri
  • Padua - La Spezia

From August 10, 2026, to August 18, 2026

  • Potential significant reduction in available rail capacity due to the closure of the Milan-Bologna rail line and the resulting operational limitations across the national rail network.

Services mainly affected:

  • Milan - Genoa
  • Milan - La Spezia
  • Padua - Genoa
  • Padua - La Spezia
  • Rubiera / Dinazzano - Livorno

From August 17, 2026, to August 28, 2026

  • Possible rail capacity limitations and reduced service frequency to and from Genoa Voltri due to infrastructure works in the Busalla area.
  • In addition, capacity for High Cube containers may be reduced, as low-deck wagons will be required.

From August 17, 2026, to September 14, 2026

  • Possible reduction in available rail capacity and rerouting of train services due to the closure of the Ovada rail line, potentially resulting in operational delays.

Weeks 34 and 35: August 17, 2026, to August 30, 2026

  • A complete suspension of rail services to and from Dinazzano and Genoa GPT is expected.
  • This limitation does not affect cargo moving to or from the Emilia area via Genoa VTE.
  • To support shipment continuity, we recommend using the intermodal connection via Livorno where possible. Due to expected high demand, this solution will be subject to limited availability and possible space restrictions.
  • As an alternative, a road transport connection from Dinazzano to Genoa GPT will be available, applying the SEIT round-trip public tariff.
  • We encourage all customers to plan shipments as far in advance as possible during the affected periods.
  • The information above is based on infrastructure work schedules and communications currently available from the railway infrastructure and may be subject to change.
  • While it is not possible to accurately predict the operational impact of each intervention, Hapag-Lloyd will continue to monitor the situation and, where possible, implement suitable operational solutions to minimize disruptions and support service continuity.
  • To support you during this period of rail restrictions, Hapag-Lloyd will proactively reach out to regular customers to discuss alternative solutions and help safeguard inland flows as much as possible.
  • Please note that any storage and/or demurrage costs that may arise as a consequence of these rail restrictions remain payable by the customer, as these circumstances are outside Hapag-Lloyd’s control.
  • Customers may also temporarily consider alternative transport solutions managed directly by themselves, based on their specific operational and commercial requirements.

For any further information, please contact your local Hapag-Lloyd representative.
