Republic of Liberia, West African country situated on the Atlantic coast. Liberia was founded as a sovereign state in 1847 by freed American and Caribbean slaves. The country covers an area of approximately 111,369 square kilometers. Liberia administers several offshore islands, including Bushrod Island and the Robertsport Peninsula.
Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe, is the capital and largest city of Liberia, serving as the main economic, cultural, and political center. The city is located on the Atlantic coast at Cape Mesurado.
Liberia has a population of around 5 million inhabitants as per the 2019 census. The official language spoken is English, with over 20 indigenous languages also widely used.

The country's terrain consists of mostly flat to rolling coastal plains, with mangroves and swamps along the coast, rising to a rolling plateau and low mountains in the northeast.
