You are passionate about seafaring and would enjoy working in an international team? You may already have the goal of becoming a Chief Engineer and want to gain the practical sea service required for a degree in Marine Engineering?
As a Technical Officer Assistant, you will work worldwide as part of our crew and contribute to the smooth operation of our container vessels.
Your training begins with an information day approximately six weeks before the start of training for you and your family. Apprentices and officers provide insights into life on board and the working environment at sea.
This is followed by a one-week introduction program in Hamburg, where you will meet your future colleagues and trainers and learn more about Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg.
The professional training starts with a seven-week metalworking course and a two-week Basic Safety Training course. During these courses, you will learn welding, turning, soldering, manual metalworking, and basic firefighting and rescue skills.
After a short break, you will join one of our training vessels together with 13 other apprentices and two dedicated training officers. During this initial voyage, you will be prepared for your future assignments on board.
Afterwards, you will complete voyages of up to three months on board together with another apprentice. The total training duration is approximately two years, including at least 18 months of sea service.

Lateral Entry
- In addition to the standard training path, lateral entry is possible. This means that the training period can be shortened to 12 months of net sea service.
- The required qualification is a completed three-and-a-half-year vocational training program in a metalworking or electrical profession.
- After a two-week Basic Safety Training course, you will join one of our training vessels together with the other apprentices.
Usual Path
- After receiving the training certificate from Berufsbildungsstelle Seeschifffahrt e.V., you can directly begin the six-semester degree program in Marine Engineering, the career path toward Chief Engineer.
- After graduation, your maritime career starts on board as a 3rd or 2nd Engineer in the technical department.
- With further sea service experience as 2nd Engineer, you will qualify for the certification as Chief Engineer.
- All certifications are issued by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency.
