There are moments every seafarer remembers: stepping on board a ship for the first time that will become your home for months, steering a vessel along the Elbe towards the North Sea, passing through the Suez or Panama Canal, or seeing the skyline of New York for the first time. If you want to experience these moments yourself and understand how ships are loaded and unloaded in highly modern ports such as Singapore, how powerful marine engines operate, and how vessels over 300 meters are precisely maneuvered into port, an apprenticeship at sea is the right choice.
Apprenticeship opportunities

Before the official start of your apprenticeship, you and your family will be invited to an information day in Hamburg approximately six weeks in advance. During this session, current apprentices and experienced seafarers will provide insights into life on board and the working environment at sea.
- The apprenticeship begins in August with an introductory week in Hamburg. You will meet your future colleagues and trainers and gain an understanding of Hapag-Lloyd and the city.
- The technical training starts with a mandatory basic safety course covering firefighting and rescue procedures at a maritime vocational school.
- After a short break, you will join one of our training vessels together with 13 other apprentices and two dedicated training officers. During this phase, you will learn the fundamentals of ship operations.
- Following this, you will complete individual voyages lasting between two and four months, either independently or with another trainee.
- Between voyages, training phases alternate between vacation periods and vocational school attendance (applicable to ship mechanic trainees).
