How We Deliver Decarbonization for You

Hapag Lloyd Decarbonization x

1. Fleet Growth and Renewal

Hapag-Lloyd invests into our future fleet portfolio by adding new, larger and more efficient tonnage to our fleet. We are also constantly increasing the dual-fuel propulsion share of our assets.

At the same time, we are gradually phasing out older, smaller, and overproportionally inefficient vessels from our fleet.

2. Network Efficiency

We are increasing our global network efficiency and the way we design and execute our operations on terminal and voyage level. The gained time enables us to reduce the overall service speed on the water while maintaining competitive transit times.

3. Efficiency Levers

We’re applying technical measures to reduce fuel consumption of our existing fleet, thus making our assets fit for the future.

Via the Fleet Upgrade Program (FUP), we are implementing a variety of technical measures – from proven solutions like new propellers to innovative new technologies.

4. Alternative Fuels

We are increasing the usage of biofuels, while also expanding our portfolio to other alternative fuels like biomethane or methanol. We are continuously assessing the optimal mix of alternative fuels in our global fleet.

You can actively reduce the emissions of your shipments by choosing Ship Green. It lets you lower the CO2e footprint of the ocean leg of your transport compared to traditional marine fuel oil by using certified biofuel options.

Ship Green enables you to reduce the CO2e emissions of the ocean leg of your shipments by using second-generation biofuel. Depending on your preference, emissions can be reduced by 25%, 50%, or up to 100% compared to transportation using conventional marine fuels. Ship Green is based on a verified book-and-claim approach, which allows the use of biofuel independently of the physical vessel or route, making the product globally available.

You can directly add Ship Green to your shipment during the quotation or booking stage in Quick Quotes and Quick Quotes Spot. Alternatively, you can add it to a confirmed booking via the Navigator or the Additional Services page. For customers with larger volumes, Ship Green can also be purchased offline through contracts and does not need to be bought exclusively online.

The Ship Green Declaration details the emissions avoided by the customer, the corresponding TEU, and the amount of biofuel used. The entire process and methodology behind the declaration are verified annually by an independent audit firm. Declarations are issued quarterly.

Today, Ship Green is based on certified second-generation biofuels/biodiesel. In parallel, Hapag-Lloyd is already operating dual-fuel LNG Vessels and is scaling liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) as a renewable drop-in fuel. Looking ahead, we are preparing for next-generation fuels such as e-methanol and other low-emission options, supported by fleet upgrades and new builds on our path to net zero by 2045.
