How to Shield Your Cargo

You Can Add Cargo Shield Directly to Your Quotation:

  1. Log into the Hapag-Lloyd Online Business Suite and go to "New Quote".
  2. add Cargo Shield directly during the Quotation stage.
  3. After getting a quote go to the Booking tool. Enter your Quotation number and Cargo Shield will automatically be added to your booking

 

You Can Also Add Cargo Shield to an Existing Booking

  1. Go to the Additional Services page in the Online Business Suite and click on Cargo Shield.
  2. Enter your Booking number, agree to the terms and conditions, and click on “Purchase Cargo Shield” 

What does Cargo Shield Protect?

Cargo Shield Extends the Liability For:

  • Fire and explosion
  • Stranding, grounding, sinking or capsizing of vessel
  • Collision
  • Total loss of vessel
  • Damage during handling operations
  • General Average and salvage contributions, including security
  • Jettison of cargo
  • Earthquake, volcanic eruption or lightning
  • Washing overboard
  • Entry of sea, rain, river or lake water into container / ship’s hold
  • Overturning or derailment of truck or train, while under Hapag-Lloyd B/L
  • Malicious damage by third parties
  • Breakage
  • Shortage
  • Pilferage and/or Theft
  • Piracy

Including associated storage, debris removal and destruction costs up to a total of USD 10,000, always within the overall Cargo Shield limit.

Cargo Shield does not protect:

  • Ordinary wear and tear
  • Ordinary leakage / loss in weight or volume
  • Inherent vice of the cargo
  • Insufficient or unsuitable packing or preparation
  • Wilful misconduct by the customer
  • Delay (including if caused by any of the reasons listed above under “What is Protected?”)
  • Electrical or mechanical derangement
  • Sanctioned cargoes / countries*
  • Excluded commodities, which are detailed within our Terms & Conditions

How to Submit a Claim for Cargo Shield

With our Cargo Claims solution, filing claims for damaged freight is quick and easy. The user-friendly interface allows you to upload necessary documentation and photos to support your claim.

1. Login or Register:

Register in our Online Business Suite or log in. Alternatively, you can also file a claim as a guest.

2. Add your shipment and documentation data:

Fill in all necessary information, including the BL/SWB number, container number, and upload cargo claim documentation, such as the commercial invoice, or add photos.

3. Enter your contact details:

Tell us how we can get back to you regarding your cargo claim.

4. Submit on "Submit Claim":

Receive your summary with the reference number via email.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cargo Shield is not Insurance product. It is an extended liability product, which provides an extra layer of security. It widens the carriage terms and conditions of our standard bill of lading in case of damage to your cargo, upto the value of the Cargo Shield variant purchased.

Cargo Shield works independent of your existing Insurance. It will offer an additional layer of security. Serving as a perfect addition to your insurance, it can cover your deductible and could protect your loss record.

Cargo Shield can be added directly to your Quotation (Quick Quotes & Quick Quotes Spot) or it can be purchased selectively for individual shipments after you have already placed a booking.

Cargo Shield can be added directly to your Web Quotation during the "Additional Services" step. Your booking will then directly be updated with Cargo Shield once the quotation is used.

Yes, Cargo Shield can be purchased online for individual bookings in a few easy steps.

Cargo shield can be purchased upto final acceptance of shielded goods for carriage by Hapag-Lloyd AG

Cargo Shield applies to the entire booking; hence all containers in that respective booking are each protected up until the respective protection amount. For example: If a quotation/ booking contains 10 containers and you purchase Cargo Shield – Standard package protection $ 15000 / container with a price of $28 / container. The total maximum protection in this case would be $150000 (i.e. 10 containers x $15000) for that booking and the protection fee payable would be $280 (i.e. $28 x 10 containers)

Cargo Shield is currently available for shipments carried in Dry Containers (20’GP, 40’GP and 40’HC) and is currently unavailable for Reefers, Special, Tanks, Shipper Owned Containers.

Subject to our Booking Amendment policy, Cargo Shield all only apply to those containers which are linked to a booking at the time of loading from the first POL.

Cargo Shield cannot be cancelled after it has been purchased, however if your booking is cancelled latest 1 day before ETD, then
Cargo Shield will be automatically cancelled without a penalty (subject to booking cancellation fees).

Commodity restrictions applies and the following commodities are not available for Cargo Shield; Dangerous Goods, Living animals, weapons, ammunition, explosives, crude oil, coal of any kind or project cargo for coal plants, drugs, jewellery, species/fine art, precious metals/coin and cash, dangerous goods, cargoes whose trade poses a danger to endangered species, military cargo, waste, breakbulk and sanctioned cargo.

Yes, Cargo Shield is available for purchase worldwide, except for certain geographical exclusions as stated in our Terms & Conditions.

Subject to our Booking Amendment policy, Cargo Shield only applies to those containers which are linked to a booking at the time of loading from the first POL.

The protection value cannot be changed after it has been purchased.

The purchase variant cannot be changed after the purchase.

The main difference between the 3 compensation limits is the amount of maximum compensation.

Yes, local tax of the country (where the product is purchased and/paid for) will apply.

Our Online Claims solutions provide an easy-to-use channel to file your claim in just a few clicks.

The maximum amount claimed cannot exceed the purchased Cargo Shield compensation limit.

You may include freight and other expenses in your claim, however, please be aware that the overall compensation you may receive for your entire claim will not be more than the purchased Cargo Shield compensation limit.

You can always decide if you want to send a surveyor (at your own cost), but we recommend informing us if you do so.​
