Software
Development

We design, develop, and run customer-facing applications and internal systems that simplify logistics, improve transparency, and accelerate decision-making across our network.

Our teams work across the full product lifecycle: discovery, architecture, engineering, quality, release, and operations.

We build with a strong focus on reliability, performance, security-by-design, and user experience, through collaborating closely with product management, data & AI teams, operations, and cybersecurity.

Let’s focus on: Freight Information System (FIS). We develop, maintain, and improve Hapag-Lloyd’s core shipping software called FIS. It is a central part of Hapag-Lloyd’s technology landscape: our core operating system supporting critical end-to-end shipping execution and the operational reporting used across day-to-day business.

Within Software Development, our work around FIS focuses on:

  • Building and maintaining applications and services that enable and streamline operational processes running on or connected to FIS
  • Interfaces, APIs, and integrations that connect FIS with customer-facing digital products, partner solutions, and internal platforms
  • Operational reporting and transparency based on FIS data, helping teams monitor performance, identify exceptions, and act faster
  • Stability, performance, and resilience improvements for FIS-dependent solutions, ensuring reliable operations at global scale
  • Security-by-design and compliance-ready delivery for systems that handle business-critical data and processes

In short, we make sure FIS remains a strong, dependable backbone – while continuously improving how people and products interact with it.

Let’s focus on: Digital Customer Experience & Engineering (DXE)

Digital Customer Experience & Engineering (DXE) at Hapag-Lloyd builds the products that customers see, touch, and rely on every day — from first quote to final delivery.

We own the end-to-end digital experience for Hapag-Lloyd’s customers: the Online Business Suite — a platform of 35+ applications covering everything from quoting and booking to tracking, documentation, and invoicing. Our work directly shapes how thousands of freight forwarders, importers, and exporters interact with one of the world’s largest shipping lines, and we measure our success by the one metric that matters most: what our customers actually think.

DXE brings together Product Managers, Engineers and Tech Leads, Cloud and AI Engineers, Product Designers, Product Researchers, Product Analysts, and Agile Coaches — working together in cross-functional teams across Hamburg, Gdańsk, and Chennai. We’re around 100 people who genuinely care about what we ship and how we ship it.

We run 12 product teams organized around the full customer journey — from onboarding and quoting through booking, tracking, and documentation. Together, we deliver around 80 features every quarter through quarterly planning cycles with Scrum and Kanban, keeping a rhythm that balances strategic bets with continuous improvement. Every roadmap decision is informed by real customer feedback, close collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd’s headquarters and regional teams, and a shared ambition to achieve best-in-class NPS in our industry.

Our tech stack and standards
We build with Scala on the backend and Vue on the frontend — both on their latest versions, with our own in-house libraries and frameworks that let us move fast without sacrificing consistency. Our products are designed using our own design system, ensuring a coherent experience across every touchpoint. Infrastructure runs on AWS, and our engineering standards are high by design: DORA metrics, automated quality gates, and continuous delivery are how we work, not aspirations. And we’ve gone further — AI tooling is embedded across the entire department, from code generation and review to design exploration and testing, making us one of the most AI-augmented product engineering teams in the industry.

What we focus on

  • Customer-facing digital products — we design, build, and evolve the 35+ applications within the Online Business Suite that customers use to book shipments, track cargo, manage documents, and interact with Hapag-Lloyd at every step of their journey
  • Customer closeness as a practice, not a slogan — we work hand-in-hand with Hapag-Lloyd’s regional offices and headquarters to understand what customers actually need, run continuous feedback loops, and treat NPS as a north-star metric that shapes our priorities
  • User experience that starts with research — our Product Designers and Researchers work directly with customers to understand real pain points, prototype solutions, and validate ideas before a single line of code is written
  • Engineering excellence as a daily practice — we don’t just talk about quality; we measure it, automate it, and improve it quarter by quarter through DORA metrics, code review standards, and a culture where engineers take ownership of what they build
  • AI-powered engineering workflows — AI isn’t a side project for us; it’s woven into how we work every day, helping our teams write, review, test, and ship with higher confidence and speed
  • Integration and connectivity — we work closely with Hapag-Lloyd’s backbone system — the Freight Information System — and IT clusters across the company to provide our customers with high-quality data and operational information aggregated from the entire organization
  • Data-informed product decisions — our Product Analysts and PMs use analytics, experimentation, and customer feedback to drive what we build next, so every feature earns its place on the roadmap

We operate as a strategic business driver — not a service desk. Our teams partner closely with commercial, operations, data & AI, and cybersecurity teams to make sure that what we build creates measurable impact: higher customer satisfaction, stronger digital adoption, and real competitive differentiation in an industry that’s transforming fast.

In short, we’re the team behind Hapag-Lloyd’s digital front door — and we’re making it wider, smarter, and easier to walk through.
