Reliability, Connectivity & Sustainability

Gemini Cooperation

Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk have signed an agreement for a new long-term operational collaboration called ”Gemini Cooperation”, which will start in February 2025. The ambition is to deliver a fast, flexible and interconnected ocean network with industry-leading reliability being its cornerstone.

Gemini Cooperation will cover seven trades and offer 57 services including mainliner and dedicated shuttle services, complemented by feeder services. The fleet of our new partnership will consist of around 340 modern and efficent vessels, many ready to adopt cleaner fuels, with a total standing capacity of ~3.7 million.

  • Strategically aligned partners with equal rights will result in faster decision-making, backed by contractual obligations

(1) Above 90% once the network is fully phased in

Connectivity

Excellent network coverage with efficient connections and competitive transit times

  • Network centered around hubs that are mostly jointly controlled and managed by Gemini Cooperation partners
  • Large and dedicated shuttles run by Gemini Cooperation partners will serve an extensive port network, complemented by feeders
  • Frequent shuttles in synchronized connections with reliable mainliners will half dwell times and allow cargo to reach the desired destination faster

  • Reduce absolute emissions over 1/3rd by 2030 and net-zero by 2045(1)
  • Further enhance green product offerings towards our customers
  • Levers that will enable decarbonization: effective hub & spoke model, speed optimization, larger ships, strategic terminal hubs, alternative fuels, reduced waiting times

1) Absolute emissions for full fleet vs. 2022 actuals

Key facts

Gemini at a Glance

After thorough consideration, Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk have jointly confirmed the expected network design for our Gemini Cooperation, which is set to launch on February 1, 2025. As the situation in the Red Sea remains highly dynamic, we plan to continue to sail around the Cape of Good Hope, as the safety and well-being of our seafarers, our vessels and the cargo of our customers are key. We will return to the Red Sea when it is safe to do so.
