Controlled Atmosphere Technologies

With Controlled Atmosphere we offer different technologies that can be chosen during the booking process. Below, you will find an overview about our technologies and when to use them.

ExtraFresh

A technology designed to control and preserve the desired transport atmosphere for fruitsand vegetables.

Hapag-Lloyd ExtraFresh takes advantage of the natural fruit respiration process to slow down the ripening and thus maintain the cargo's quality and extend the product's shelf life.

  • Uses natural fruit respiration to slow down ripening.
  • Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
  • Equipped with membrane and vacuum pump to extract CO2 produced by the cargo.
  • Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air when O2 levels drop below set point.
  • Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.
  • Typical products include avocados, bananas and mangoes.

ExtraFresh Plus

In addition to the ExtraFresh features, the ExtraFresh Plus technology allows injection of nitrogen and carbon dioxide before sea voyage. It is primarily used for low respiring cargo, that can't produce the optimal atmosphere by natural respiration alone.

  • Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors.
  • Equipped with membrane and vacuum pump to extract CO2 when levels go above set point.
  • Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when O2 levels drop below set point.
  • Active Nitrogen (N2) and CO2 injection during transport.
  • As with ExtraFresh technology, ExtraFresh Plus also use natural fruit respiration process to slow down ripening.
  • Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes.
  • Especially beneficial for sensitive cargo with high CO2 requirements such as blueberries.

Third Party Technologies - Liventus and Maxtend

Liventus and Maxtend fitted containers describe a special supplement for Reefer containers. They create a tailor-made atmosphere via pre-trip gas injections. An additional controller is monitoring & recording the atmospheric composition inside the Reefer. Such “Controlled Atmosphere” containers are ideal for low respiring cargo.

  • Pre-injection gas mixture (N2 and CO2) the system can modify and preserve desired atmosphere
  • Equipped with oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors
  • Equipped with automatic ventilation to let in fresh air, when O2 levels drop below set point
  • Ethylene scrubbers are available for sensitive cargoes

Key Features

  • Extended Shelf Life: By controlling oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, our solutions extend the transport time for sensitive products like avocados, bananas, and berries.
  • End-to-End Visibility: Track your Controlled Atmosphere shipments in real-time throughout the entire shipping journey, ensuring transparency and control.
  • Optimized Transport Conditions: Reefer containers precisely control temperature, humidity, and air composition to minimize spoilage and maintain cargo integrity during transit.
  • Suitable for Long-Distance Transport: By preserving the needed conditions like temperature, humidity and more the ripening process can be slowed, making Controlled Atmosphere an excellent choice for long transports

Frequently Asked Questions

Controlled Atmosphere technology involves regulating the composition of gases within a refrigerated container to slow down the respiration rates of perishable goods, such as fruits and vegetables. By adjusting oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, Controlled Atmosphere helps delay ripening and extends the shelf life of produce during transportation.

Controlled Atmosphere technology is particularly advantageous for perishable commodities sensitive to ripening and spoilage. Products such as avocados, bananas, blueberries, and mangos can experience extended transport times and improved quality upon arrival when shipped under controlled atmospheric conditions.

Hapag-Lloyd Controlled Atmosphere is an additional service and not a free-of-charge product. It will be charged on top of the sea freight as a surcharge and will be invoiced together with the sea freight. For more details, please contact your Sales representative.
