Albert Ballin Forum 19 and 20 May 2022

The Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) was founded 175 years ago.  To mark this occasion, Hapag-Lloyd AG is organizing the second  Albert Ballin Forum Hamburg on May 19 and 20. The event will be held in the Hamburg Museum located at Holstenwall 24, 20355 Hamburg.

By establishing the Albert Ballin Forum and the Albert Ballin Awards, Hapag-Lloyd commemorates the man who made the company great: Albert Ballin. The Hamburg native and shipping company executive, who may be regarded as an engine of the first globalization around 1900, combined commercial vigor with social and political responsibility.

The forum was organized in collaboration with the Deutsche Hafenmuseum (lit. ‘German port museum’) and the Franz Vranitzky Chair for European Studies at the University of Vienna and sees itself as an interdisciplinary scientific forum dedicated to reflecting on historical, current and future processes of globalization. In its anniversary year, Hapag-Lloyd AG wanted to offer scientists the opportunity to develop open and critical perspectives on future global developments on the basis of their research findings.

Albert Ballin Forum 2022

With this publication we would like to make the lectures of the Albert Ballin Symposium on the Future of Global Transfers and the contributions to the reception of the Senate of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the foundation of Hapag and the awarding of the Albert Ballin Prizes accessible to the public and thus contribute to the discussion on the opportunities and risks of "globalisation" under the auspices of crises and wars.
