Changes to Manifest Amendment Fee structure
Thanks to your feedback, we have reevaluated the parameters of our Manifest Amendment Fee structure to align with your needs and expectations. Therefore, from August 16, 2023, we have implemented the following structure:
Here’s an important change that will improve your experience with Hapag-Lloyd North America*.
From June 1, 2023, we will no longer accept manual draft approvals and corrections. With this change, the email addresses [email protected] and [email protected] will no longer be monitored.
From June 26, 2023 onwards, we will transition to a faster, more efficient, and secure process for managing draft approvals and corrections. Although it may require an adjustment to your current processes, our user-friendly website is easy to navigate. Submit document corrections and approvals online for real-time updates on document status. Our correction team will email you immediately if there are delays, eliminating the need for follow-ups.
To get started: Simply click on the link in your notification email or log into the Bill of Lading draft (BL) approval web solution directly. From there, you can approve your BL draft in seconds, if it’s correct. If you require a correction, you can edit it and return it to us and you will receive a new BL draft shortly. Please note that we will release the BL or Sea Waybill once the vessel has sailed.
We understand that this change may require an adjustment to your current processes, but we want to assure you that our online platform is user-friendly and easy to navigate. To learn more, watch our step-by-step video tutorial. By submitting all documentation corrections and approvals through our website, you can benefit from real-time updates on the status of your documents.
Here's a quick guide on how to use the BL Draft Approval web solution:
The status of your amendments can be tracked on our website. If a delay is expected, our correction team will contact you immediately by email, so you do not need to do any follow-ups. If you should require additional information or have questions, please feel free to reach out to our customer service team at your location, who will guide you based on your individual situation.
* The US and Canada are part of Hapag-Lloyd's Region North America. Please note that the scope of Region North America includes USA and Canada. However, USA does NOT include bookings or documents handled by our Los Angeles office.
***Update May 13, 2024
The news about the Port of Baltimore readying for vessel traffic by the end of May 2024 might have reached you by now. With this positive development, our Americas Service (USW) and our A-Service (ATA) are expected to start calling Baltimore again from week 21. However, we continue to follow updates from the Port Authority, as the debris removal from the March incident must be safely completed before opening for vessel traffic. Thinking about your cargo planning, the first vessels expected to call Baltimore are:
Americas Service (USW)
A-Service (ATA) - already accepting bookings
We will continue to update you with information as soon as it is available.
***Update April 25, 2024
ACL has communicated that they will resume service with immediate effect. Since the removal of the collapsed bridge sections from the Chesapeake Bay is such a monumental task, ACL would like to provide customers with an option until the Limited Access channel is fully operational.
For imports to Baltimore, ACL is now accepting bookings with the option for cargo discharge at Norfolk or New York, if necessary. If the re-opening is on schedule, cargo will be discharged in Baltimore. However, in the event of a delay, cargo will be discharged at the alternative port chosen by the customer. The first ACL sailing will be the Atlantic Sun, departing from Hamburg on April 24, Antwerp on April 26, and Liverpool on April 30, 2024, with an expected arrival in Baltimore on May 11, 2024.
For exports from Baltimore, the initial sailing will be the Atlantic Sun on May 11, 2024. In the case of a delayed re-opening, ACL will redirect cargo to Norfolk or New York, as selected by the customer. If the re-opening occurs as planned, cargo will be loaded in Baltimore.
***Update April 20, 2024
The Captain of the Port established the Fort Carroll Temporary Alternate Channel, which is on the northeast side of the main channel in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and will provide limited access for commercially essential vessels. This action is part of a phased approach to opening the main channel and is the third temporary channel created to ease the flow of traffic at the channel.
Members of the Key Bridge Response Unified Command are working tirelessly to complete the steps necessary to support full access to the Fort McHenry channel.
***Update April 19, 2024
Columbia Coastal Transport will resume its barge service at Ports America Terminal for access to and from the Port of Baltimore, effective April 26, 2024. This relaunch follows improved channel access.
Please note an additional surcharge of $50 per container will apply to standard barge rates for containers at Ports America Marine Terminal (Seagirt) in Baltimore until further notice. For barge service inquiries to/from Baltimore, please contact Columbia Coastal Transport directly.
The main channel's reopening remains anticipated around the end of May.
***Update April 5, 2024
Temporary service between New York and Baltimore
As the regrettable Baltimore bridge collapse continues to impact supply chains, a temporary intermodal service between Elizabeth Marine Terminal (EMT) and Seagirt Marine Terminal has been established. This new service will be available from April 5, 2024, and will operate five (5) days per week in each direction.
For import containers:
Please pick up import units at the Seagirt Marine Terminal
For export containers:
Please drop off export units at the Seagirt Marine Terminal
For additional details such as cut-offs, please refer to the Norfolk Southern website here.
***Update April 4, 2024
The channel's restoration to its earlier functionality is anticipated by the end of May 2024.
***Update March 28, 2024
While there were no Hapag-Lloyd containers on the vessel involved in the collision, we recognize that this incident will still have repercussions on our customers' cargo planning. Therefore, the following contingency plan in compliance with Bill of Lading clause No. 18 "Matters Affecting Performance," will be implemented:
For import containers to Baltimore:
For export containers from Baltimore:
For barge service between Baltimore and Norfolk / Philadelphia:
***Update March 27, 2024
As you might have seen in the news, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on the early hours of March 26, 2024, after it was hit by a container vessel. This regretful incident has halted the Port of Baltimore’s vessel traffic, a situation that will continue until further notice, and might therefore affect your cargo planning.
With the current situation, we are expecting to omit Baltimore in the foreseeable future and are working on alternatives to minimize the impact on your supply chain. Our services calling the port of Baltimore; mainly the A-Service (ATA) and the Americas Service (USW), present alternatives for import and export cargo through the ports of New York and Norfolk. These options will be considered depending on your preference and service configuration, and our local teams are preparing more detailed information to assist you, including guidance for full gated-in containers, empty containers positioned to your premises and other operational details.
Our thoughts are with those who have been affected, and we will continue to share updates as soon as they are made available. Therefore, we would like to encourage you to bookmark this page for further updates.
If you have questions concerning the above disruption, please contact our customer service team at your location, who will guide you based on your individual situation.

Here’s an update on rail routes for Hapag-Lloyd shipments
We would like to inform you about upcoming changes to the rail routes for Hapag-Lloyd shipments in the United States, which may impact your deliveries. Unfortunately, our partners at Norfolk Southern have decided to close certain options for rail routes, with these adjustments taking effect from February 19, 2024. Please be aware of the following changes:
Birmingham to/from Savannah & Charleston:
We have signed contracts with the CSX rail line, reopening the lane for Savannah to/from Birmingham. The CSX rail line extends to Bessemer, AL, which is just 20 minutes from Birmingham.
New Orleans to/from Savannah & Charleston:
Contracts with the CSX rail line have allowed us to reopen the lane for Savannah to/from New Orleans. Currently, there is no alternative for Charleston.
Greensboro to/from Norfolk:
Unfortunately, we do not have an alternative rail route for this option. We recommend Carrier Haulage as the alternative.
Louisville, Chicago, Cincinnati to/from Savannah & Charleston:
Shipments to these inland locations will now go through the port of Norfolk and New York. There are no alternative routes via Savannah or Charleston. Update - Please be informed that the route Louisville to/from Charleston is now available with rail provider CSX.
Memphis, Atlanta, to/from Jacksonville:
We do not have an alternative rail route for this option. Carrier Haulage is recommended as the alternative.
All the above rail routes are currently in effect, and we are not accepting new bookings until further notice. We understand the importance of a smooth and reliable transportation experience for your shipments. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause. Rest assured, we are fully committed to identifying suitable alternatives and will keep you informed of any further developments.
